Does it seem like I have been talking about food a lot lately?
This was our dinner the other day. A grouper, four lion fish, and a slipper lobster made for a "fish feast" as Conrad called it. We only ate the larger lion fish but they want you to kill all you can because it is an invasive species.
Matt managed to clean them without getting stung by the nasty spines. They are very tasty when you bread and fry them (but then again what isn't). Unfortunately, Matt lost the last tip from his Hawaiian sling and there are no replacements to be found anywhere on the island (Staniel Cay). There is a shipment of groceries and supplies to the island every week except that it is three weeks on and one week off and this is an off week. So no chance of replacing it this week.
We have been at Staniel for a bit now because one of our engines isn't working. That wouldn't be so bad because we have another engine but our generator, which we need to "make" water, is acting up too. So we would have to dock with just one engine, which is a challenge for the behemoth that is our boat. We are deciding whether to continue on to Georgetown, head back to Nassau, or go all the way back to Ft. Lauderdale. In the meantime, we are enjoying the view while we decide.

Is it bad that I feel more sorry for the pretty lion fish and the poor lobsters who lived free in the protected area that you sneaked up on, than say, the crab legs I get at Joe's Crab Shack?

Hey, you been busy lately? That's why we haven't gotten any rays--it seems like killing a butterfly or something. They want you to kill as many lionfish as possible, even if you don't eat them. They're bad news for the environment here.
DeleteI'm with (K)arla. I was really feeling bad for those lobsters and the pretty lionfish but doesn't stop me from getting a steampot at Joe's or lobster tail with my steak. Does lionfish taste good?
ReplyDeleteLionfish is good; very flaky, mild and not fishy at all. Maybe like an orange roughy? We have only had it battered and lightly fried because the filets have been too small to grill.
DeleteIn a strange coincidence, there was a couple of guys on Shark Tank (are you familiar with that show?) who were trying to get an investment to kill and sell lionfish for restaurants. They said that the lionfish eat all the yummier fish and lobster larvae, and are practically impossible to catch (except with a spear). They also have no known predators. They do not, however, look very appetizing (they had a fried one on a plate with the spines still on). So, BON APPETITE!
ReplyDeleteI have been busy. My oldest girl had to have some surgery, so I spent some time up in the North Chicago suburbs with her. She seems to be on the mend. Almost motorcycle weather up here too, so that's good!
Yeah, those spines are poisonous so it's a bit tricky to catch them. Never seen Shark Tank. Sorry to hear about your daughter; I hope she gets better soon.
